I want you to take a look at the image below real fast. Brings back memories of a “simpler” time doesn’t it? The names of the people on their remind us all that for a brief moment in time, there were folks that imagined union-buster Scott Walker would be fighting Texas tough guy Rick Perry in an all out, bare knuckle boxing match between Scott’s Koch brother money and Rick’s Texas two step while Rand Paul yelled from the sidelines wishing to be included. They all could fight, but none would get anywhere without first going through Jeb!
This was the image I saw in an email from a good and knowledgable consultant I know from my politicking days. It’s an MSNBC poll from June 2015. Man, I just look at that I it takes me back to two feelings- one of fear and one of relief.
I was just a college sophomore when Jeb(!) was going around the country on his non-presidential but totally running for president presidential tour. At that point too Hillary was also filling her coffers and making it abundantly clear it wasn’t a matter of *if* she was running, just a matter of time of when that would happen. like a retirement home production of Godzilla vs King Kong, no one was what you would consider excited for the two heirs of America’s most affluent political dynasties to go head to head for their chance to screw up America.
All that was missing was the Mothra factor- the Mecha-Godzilla to come down and make the battle all the more interesting. But instead of coming out of a volcano or falling from space he came down an escalator and things haven’t been the same since. Say what you want about the master of the Art of the Deal, but defeating Jeb and taking away what he considered his birthright shows something big, that enough angry and fed up people can still make a dent in American politics if they’ve been pushed far and hard enough beyond the point of no return.
Jeb should have been listening to people instead of lecturing them, maybe he could have at least been forgiven in the court of public opinion for having the last name Bush. This could be said for anybody, like Mitt Romney, who spends more time scolding the President and his supporters instead of coming down and slumming it with the rest of us. Last time Mitt did that, he was kissing babies across the country and eating fried meat off a stick in Iowa, but he’s a Senator from a state he hasn’t even lived in for more than a decade, he doesn’t have to act like he doesn’t like us anymore, this is the most honest we’ve seen contentious Mitt Romney probably ever.
Political movements are confusing, but listening to people and fighting for solutions that can make America strong and thriving instead of thriving with losers that toss milkshakes at their political opponents is probably a safe bet every time.
The email concluded, “look at the Democrat primary. It’s gonna be Bernie, Pete, or Beto. We want Biden, but he is going to have to scrap for it. Also, he has super delegates that we don’t have in the GOP. Anything can happen, but if Biden is like Bush, it could completely change. Notice, President Trump ended up winning and he didn’t even rank in this poll.”
Anything can happen- good, bad, or in between.
